Stock Transfer

Gifts of stocks and mutual funds are an extremely tax-efficient gifting option.

A gift of highly-appreciated securities offers you two-fold tax savings by avoiding the capital gains tax you’d owe if you sold the stock and then made the gift.

Making a gift of appreciated stock allows you to take an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the stock at the time of the gift, regardless of how much you paid for the shares when you bought them. (Stock should be owned for more than one year to qualify for the tax advantages.)

Gifts of long-term capital gain stock are deductible up to a maximum of 30% of your adjusted gross income.

Please consult your tax advisor for specifics.

Planned Giving

One of the most effective ways you can ensure that our youth continue to receive a high quality, value-based Catholic education for the long term is by leaving a bequest in your will. While often thought of as a “planned gift”, it is much more than that. You can leave a lasting legacy and help Foundations in Education support students, families and schools well into the future.

If you are “willing” to commit, it is important that you take action now to ensure a lasting legacy to the organizations you care about most, and we hope you will consider including Foundations in Education in your will. It is simple to do. Talk with your family and financial advisors, and then let us know of your intent. Please contact Holly Doherty-Lemoine at holly@foundationsineducation.org.

Donor Advised Fund (DAF)

A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is a strategic way to give that makes it easy for you to support Foundations in Education’s programs including tuition assistance for low-income students and innovation and leadership grants for teachers. It’s a convenient, flexible, and cost-effective way to manage your charitable giving.

Your support will go to work right away to help provide an excellent Catholic education and transform the lives of students or to support innovation and leadership in the classroom.

How to recommend a gift/grant to Foundations in Education

  1. Request a grant distribution through your Donor Advised Fund sponsor
  2. Be sure to use Foundations in Education’s EIN #47-5130557
  3. Indicate whether your gift/grant is unrestricted or designated to a specific program.

You may also designate Foundations in Education as a beneficiary for your Donor Advised Fund.

Foundations in Education receives direct ACH transfers from many DAF sponsors.

Alternatively, your DAF sponsor may mail your grant directly to us.

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD)

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), also known as IRA Charitable Rollovers, allow individuals age 70.5 or older to use their IRAs to maximize their charitable impact.

A QCD can help you reach your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) without having to pay income taxes on the amount of your donation. You save on your taxes and help Foundations in Education.

The Qualified Charitable Distribution is an excellent way to show your support for Foundations in Education and receive tax benefits in return. Whether you are planning your required minimum distribution (RMD) or seeking a new vehicle for giving, consider making a gift from your qualified IRA to make the most of your charitable giving.

It’s important to consult with your financial advisor and consider your unique tax situation before deciding whether to make a charitable contribution from your IRA.

To Qualify

  • You must be 70 ½ or older at the time of gift.
  • Distributions must be made directly from a traditional IRA account by your IRA administrator.
  • Gifts must be outright, meaning they go directly to Foundations in Education. Distributions to donor-advised funds or life-income arrangements such as charitable remainder trusts and charitable gift annuities do not qualify.
  • Gifts from 401k, 403b, SEP and other plans do not qualify. Ask your financial advisor if it would make sense for you to create a traditional IRA account so you can benefit from an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution.

Tax Benefits

  • IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions are excluded from gross income for federal income tax purposes on your IRS Form 1040.
  • The charitable gift counts toward your required minimum distribution in the year in which you make the gift.
  • You may avoid a higher tax bracket that might otherwise result from adding an RMD to your income.
