“When my father was battling a terminal illness, my mother felt we needed a stronger presence of God’s love to guide and strengthen us through the journey ahead,” stated Hunter as one of the main reasons she and her brother moved from public school to Catholic school.
Hunter is an eighth grade student at St. Mary School in Ridgefield, selected as this year’s student speaker at the annual Leaders of Tomorrow Reception, hosted by Foundations in Education.
Leaders of Tomorrow represent students from Diocesan elementary schools identified by their principals as students of good character, strong academics, and leadership potential, who also have demonstrated financial need.
“My Catholic education has impacted my life in many ways,” reflected Hunter. “It has shown me that I can be brave during hard times and to trust God because He has a plan for me. Knowing this makes me feel shielded by God’s love for his children.”
“Parents, thank you for choosing to place us on the path of a Catholic education, as the values could not be found elsewhere.”
Hunter drew a standing ovation from an audience of 320, which included fellow Leaders of Tomorrow students, their parents, principals, pastors, and the donors who sponsor a portion of their tuitions.
This year, Foundations in Education recognized 131 Leaders, who may otherwise be unable to attend Catholic schools – the largest pool of students since the foundation’s inception.
In his remarks, Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano shared with the students, “A leader has many great qualities and those around you see those great qualities within you. Give thanks to all of these people and give thanks to God, who made you, blessed you, and gave you all your gifts and talents. And remember, God is the best leader.”
Joe Purcell, a Leader of Tomorrow sponsor and Vice Chair of Foundations in Education Board of Trustees, shared his motivation for donating: “Simply put, these wonderful young people represent the best of our future and they are a terrific investment. To the supporters and sponsors – know that you are making a big impact in the world, creating a legacy that will endure. As they grow and take positions of authority down the road, they will create a multiplier effect on your investment as they touch, lead and ultimately inspire others.”
Leaders of Tomorrow is a unique program of the Bishop’s Scholarship Fund, which provides need-based scholarships to students in Catholic elementary schools who are identified by their principals as students of good character, strong academics, and leadership potential. Donors to the program transform the lives of children through the gift of Catholic education. In return, sponsors receive letters and pictures from the students they sponsor, and are invited to an annual celebration where they have the opportunity to connect with the students.
