BRIDGEPORT, CT: The John and Ethel Kashulon Foundation, a friend to Foundations in Education since 2019, renewed their support by making a generous grant of $75,000 to help fund the Bishop’s Scholarship Fund. The Bishop’s Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance for low-income students who attend Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Bridgeport.
John and Ethel Kashulon were children of Eastern European immigrants who owned and operated Kashulon’s Market on Sheridan Street, in Bridgeport. Devout Catholics, Ethel and John had been active members of Saints Cyril and Methodius Parish, Bridgeport, for over fifty years. John Kashulon and Ethel were married on Halloween, October 31, 1960, and enjoyed 36 years of marriage until the passing of Mr. Kashulon. Ethel worked at the Bridgeport Housing Authority for 53 years, their longest tenured employee. The John and Ethel Kashulon Foundation continues their legacy of commitment and caring for Fairfield County and Bridgeport, especially, which is the community where during their lifetime, the Kashulons were proud to live and work.
Foundations in Education’s Executive Director, Holly Doherty-Lemoine, shared, “From the first time I met the John and Ethel Kashulon Foundation Board in March 2019, I felt there was a genuine synergy between the organizations in our shared interest in making a difference in the lives of young people in our community. I am exceedingly grateful to the Board for their commitment and support in helping thousands of young children achieve the dream of a Catholic education. A special thank you to the Foundation Board members, Chris LeBris, Gail Kashulon, Jim Murray, Marty McLaughlin and George Benington for continuing the legacy of caring begun by John and Ethel Kashulon, and for helping transform the lives of the young children this grant supports.”
Foundations in Education awards nearly $3,000,000 in tuition assistance annually to more than 1,300 children and provides competitive Innovation and Leadership Grants to teachers and administrators. Foundations in Education Inc is committed to strengthen and transform the mission of Catholic education in the Diocese of Bridgeport by providing tuition assistance to families in need, supporting innovation in academic programs, and fostering opportunities for the professional development of school leaders.
